Considering a career in Public Relations? My take on getting started as a grad!

Hey everyone, I've been looking into different career paths since graduating, and Public Relations (PR) really caught my eye. It often gets a bit of a mysterious reputation, but after digging a bit deeper, it seems like such a dynamic and creative field that plays a huge role in how organisations connect with the world. What I've gathered is that it's not just about 'spin' – it's about strategically building and protecting a positive image, managing communications, and really understanding how to tell a story. You could be working on anything from crafting press releases and social media campaigns, to organising events, or even handling a full-blown crisis for a client. The variety sounds brilliant, and you get to work with so many different teams, like marketing and design, which is a big plus for me. One of the biggest takeaways for anyone thinking about PR is that work experience is absolutely key. While certain degrees like English, business, or media studies might give you a head start, it's really about showing you have the core skills. And you don't necessarily need a formal internship straight away! Think about what you're already doing at uni: writing for student publications, managing social media for a society, or even helping promote a university event. These are all fantastic ways to build a portfolio and demonstrate those essential communication, digital, and organisational skills. Speaking of skills, strong writing, confident presentation abilities, excellent interpersonal skills, and a good grasp of digital media (especially social media management) seem to be at the top of every employer's list. You'll also need to be super organised, as you'll be juggling lots of different projects and deadlines. Finding roles can involve looking beyond the usual job boards to specialist PR sites, and I've heard that networking and even speculative applications can really open doors. Just a heads-up, though – it sounds like the hours can be a bit unpredictable, especially if you're working on events or a crisis, so definitely something to be aware of.
