My Take on Plan 2 Student Loans: What I've Learnt About Repayments and Mortgages
Hey everyone, Just wanted to share some thoughts on Plan 2 Student Loans, as it's something that crops up a lot and can feel really confusing. I know for many of us, it's a huge part of our financial landscape as we start out, and it can sometimes feel like a never-ending story. One of the biggest eye-openers for me was how the interest rate can make it feel like you're running on a treadmill. You're making repayments every month, and sometimes it feels like the total amount you owe barely budges, or even goes up! It's frustrating, especially when you're working hard to get ahead. I've heard others say they feel the same – it's like you need to earn a really high salary just to cover the interest, let alone actually chip away at the principal. Another thing that's been on my mind, and I'm sure many of yours, is the impact on big life goals, like getting a mortgage. While our student loans don't typically hit our credit score, lenders definitely look at our monthly outgoings when deciding how much we can borrow. The repayment threshold freezes that have happened mean we're paying more each month than we might have expected, and that can definitely shrink the amount a bank thinks we can afford for a mortgage. It's a real balancing act trying to save for a deposit while also managing these repayments. I also used to wonder if I should try to clear my loan early. But after looking into it, it seems that for most of us, especially if you're not a super high earner, it might not be the best move. A lot of Plan 2 loans are expected to be written off after 30 years anyway. So, putting extra money towards other things, like a house deposit or higher-interest debts, often makes more financial sense. It's a tough call, but definitely worth considering your own situation. It's a lot to get your head around, and it's easy to feel a bit overwhelmed by it all. But understanding how it works, and its real-world impact, has helped me feel a bit more in control of my own financial planning. What are your thoughts or experiences with managing your Plan 2 loan?
