My Take on Breaking into Advertising Copywriting as a Grad
Hey everyone, Just wanted to share some thoughts on getting into advertising copywriting, as it's a path I've been exploring. It's definitely more than just writing catchy slogans, though that's a big part of it! You're essentially the voice of a brand, working closely with visual creatives to bring campaigns to life. You'll be interpreting client briefs, researching target audiences, and crafting everything from social media posts and website copy to full TV and radio scripts. It's super fast-paced, often demanding with tight deadlines, but also incredibly rewarding if you love words and ideas. One thing I quickly realised is that while any degree subject can get you in, showing you can actually *write* and *think creatively* is paramount. Your degree is a foundation, but what really matters is demonstrating your practical skills. This means building a portfolio. It doesn't have to be paid work initially; I started with spec ads, personal projects, and even volunteered to write for a small local charity. The goal is to showcase your ability to develop original ideas, adapt your writing style for different audiences and platforms, and understand what makes an advert effective. Key skills that employers really look for, beyond just being able to string a sentence together, include a sharp eye for detail (especially with the UK's strict legal standards for advertising!), strong commercial awareness – understanding what makes people tick and influences purchasing decisions – and being a fantastic team player. You'll be collaborating constantly with designers, account managers, and clients. Being adaptable and able to work effectively under pressure is also crucial, as campaigns often move quickly. Landing an internship or work experience placement was invaluable for me. The industry is competitive, especially for graduate schemes, so getting some practical insight, making connections, and demonstrating your commitment early on can make a huge difference. Don't be afraid to apply for these opportunities well in advance! It's a fascinating and dynamic field if you love words, ideas, and seeing your work out there. Has anyone else considered this path or already broken in? Would love to hear your experiences and tips!
