You're not just guiding tours; you're designing workshops, creating interactive materials, planning events, and even helping with funding bids. It's incredibly varied, which keeps things exciting, but also means you need a real knack for organisation and creativity. One of the biggest takeaways for me was how crucial *experience* is. While a relevant degree (think history, archaeology, education studies, or even museum studies postgrad) definitely helps, almost everyone I met stressed the importance of volunteering or internships. I spent a summer helping out at a local heritage site, and that hands-on experience, even unpaid, was invaluable for my CV and interviews. It shows you're committed and understand the practicalities. Some larger institutions also really value teaching experience, so if you've done any tutoring or youth work, definitely highlight that! It's a competitive field, so don't be disheartened if it takes a bit of time. Starting salaries might not be massive, often around the £20k mark for entry-level roles, but the job satisfaction can be huge.
